Laura is Certified to teach the following BYNT Classes:
- Bikram Method 60, 90 and Silent
How long have you been practicing Bikram Yoga?
Consistently – since the fall of 2010…but I took my first class in the summer of 2008. Yes, it took me 2 years to get back in the hot room. If only I had listened to the teacher saying, “come back tomorrow honey.”
When/Where did you attend teacher training?
Fall 2012, Los Angeles
Why did you decide to become a teacher?
I was working toward my Master’s degree, studying the connection between urban planning and public health. Particularly, I was interested in how to design the built environment and put the right policies in place so that people would be more likely to lead healthier, more active lives. In order to get me through those two years, I was also practicing almost everyday. The studio community and the yoga kept me sane, not to mention happier and healthier than I’d ever been.
One sweaty class, it hit me. THIS was how to build a healthy community – physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Like a true yogi, I didn’t drop out of my program, but I did enroll myself in the first teacher training after graduation! And I skipped my Master’s commencement ceremony so that I could teach my first two classes immediately upon arriving home from LA.
What is your favorite thing about teaching?
Observing the transformation of students from posture to posture, beginning of class to end of class, week to week, month to month, year to year. Also, belonging to a worldwide community of the most amazing, kind, and inspiring people I’ve ever known.
What is your favorite quote?
I’m a quote junkie, so I really don’t have a favourite (Canadian spelling) – but here’s one of them.
“It’s not who you are that holds you back, it’s who you think you’re not.” – Denis Waitley
